SUMMARY:Math & Society Lecture: Jeff Weeks presents 'The Shape of Space'
LOCATION:John B. Davis Lecture Hall\, Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center\, Macalester College\, StPaul\, MN
DTSTAMP:20091015T135706
DESCRIPTION:When we look out on a clear night the universe seems infinite. Yet this infinity might be an illusion. During the first half of Weeks&#39\; presentation\, computer games will introduce the concept of a multiconnected universe.&nbsp\; Interactive three-dimensional graphics will then take the viewer on a tour of several possible shapes for space. Finally\, we&#39\;ll see how recent satellite data provide tantalizing clues to the true shape of our universe.&nbsp\;The only prerequisites are curiosity and imagination. \nJeff Weeks is the author of the groundbreaking text\, The Shape of Space\, which investigates questions regarding the shape of our universe. With his cosmologist colleagues he studies satellite data in the hope of determining the shape of the real universe. He has received numerous awards for his work\, the most noteworthy being the MacArthur Fellowship in 1999. \nRefreshments served at 4:10 p.m.\; presentation begins at 4:30 p.m.
