Returnee Lunch Series: Social Class in Motion

11:30 AM  - 12:30 PM
Tuesday Apr 17, 2018
Markim Hall 303

How did the construction of social class in the country you visited differ from constructions of class at home? Did society seem more or less polarized abroad than in the United States? What factors apart from sheer wealth – e.g. access to education and housing, race, immigration status, or religion – contributed to class distinctions? Did you ever misinterpret someone’s class identity? What were the consequences? Did locals’ interpretations of your social class accord with your own self-perception? The discussion will be led by Associate Professor Rivi Handler-Spitz (Asian Languages and Cultures). RSVP here.

The returnee lunch series is designed to give recent study away returnees a chance to gather with Macalester faculty and staff to reflect on and talk about issues that come up with particular salience to study away programs.
