Hispanic Studies (In)Opportune Interventions Series Talk

4:45 PM  - 6:00 PM
Wednesday Oct 18, 2017
Neill Hall (formerly Humanities Building) 401

Join Hispanic Studies for a talk (in English) by Michael Scham, Professor of Spanish, University of St. Thomas

“From Early Modern Sonnets to Buenos Aires Soundscapes: The Literary Contexts of Tango”

Professor Scham will discuss how early modern poems and themes are appropriated by a marginal art form--tango--as it forges a new cultural space within the physical barrios of Buenos Aires; how high culture of the Spanish Empire (itself infused with popular forms) becomes raw material for the crucible of Argentine modernity.

This talk is a part of our (In)Opportune Interventions Series
