New Faculty Orientation - Identifying Your Learning Objectives and Overcoming Obstacles: Can Moodle Help?

9:00 AM  - 10:30 AM
Wednesday Aug 23, 2017
4th Floor Old Main Lounge, Old Main

The focus of this workshop is on your pedagogy; its secondary purpose is determine whether Macalester’s electronic course management system (Moodle) could help in meeting your teaching/learning objectives and overcoming obstacles students face. We will guide you through a series of written reflections and small group discussions asking questions like, “What learning outcomes do you hope students will accomplish in your class?” “What techniques or methods will students use to meet those objectives (group projects, simulations, analyzing data)?” What challenges do your students typically present (i.e., unfamiliarity with disciplinary concepts,  completing readings, participating in class discussions, finding time to meet with classmates outside of class)? What difficulties do you face in meeting your teaching objectives?” We end with specific recommendations of which Moodle components/tools might be useful given your objectives and the obstacles your students typically experience.
