Chopin Society presents pianist Benjamin Grosvenor

3:00 PM  - 5:00 PM
Sunday Feb 12, 2017
Mairs Concert Hall, Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Music Building

Since his unforgettable teenage appearances with the Chopin Society in 2006 and 2010, British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, now 24, has seen his career take off in a spectacular way. Not only does he give recitals and work with esteemed conductors and orchestras across the globe, but his recordings, including three so far for Decca, his exclusive label, consistently win five-star reviews. Superlatives abound for his luminous singing tone, uncannily mature musicality, and staggering virtuosity in everything from Bach and Couperin to Gershwin and beyond. Music critics often remark that Benjamin’s individual sound and the sense of freedom in his approach recall a bygone ‘golden’ era of pianism. A rave review from The New York Times of his recital debut at Carnegie Hall in October of 2015 even called him “boy lord of the piano.” Already in his still-young career, he has received Gramophone’s ‘Young Artist of the Year’ and ‘Instrumental’ Awards, a Classic Brits Critics’ Award, the UK Critics’ Circle Award for ‘Exceptional Young Talent,’ and a Diapason d’Or ‘Jeune Talent’ Award. Other career distinctions include UK televised appearances at First Night (2011) and Last Night of the Proms (2015), and, in May of 2016, his first experiences conducting-from-the-keyboard, in Mozart K. 595 with the Britten Sinfonia.

“Benjamin Grosvenor may well be the most remarkable young pianist of our time.”
