"Uses and Abuses of Culture: Greece 1974-2010"

5:00 PM  - 6:00 PM
Tuesday Mar 11, 2014
Hewitt Hall, Room 113, Music Building

Vicky Karaiskou, Distinguished Visiting Mellon in Art and Art History, will present Uses and Abuses of Culture: Greece 1974-2010. Karaiskou will discuss the circumstances under which both traditional culture and modernity became fields of visual power in contemporary Greek society. She will expose how these malleable cultural fields promulgated stereotypes, engaged audiences in symbolic behaviours, and became effective carriers of political power following the end of the Greek dictatorship in 1974.

Prior to coming to Macalester, Karaiskou taught Art History at the Open University of Cyprus. Her latest book, Uses and Abuses of Culture: Greece 1974- 2010, was published in 2013 by the University Studio Press, Thessaloniki, Greece.

This event is sponsored by the Mellon Next Stages Grant.
