The Painted City: Murals, Placemaking, and Community Building in the Twin Cities

Over the last century, mural painting has become an increasingly prominent fixture within the urban landscape. Decorating the walls of urban streets throughout American cities, mural paintings can be considered powerful tools within urban communities because of their ability to create place through inspiring meaningful relationships between populations and space, representing marginalized populations and providing a means for expression for communities. This paper examines mural painting and their purpose in three distinct communities in Minneapolis—St. Paul, Minnesota using field research, interviews, and GIS technology.
