International Roundtable 2013: Global Health: Promoting Equity Within and Across Borders

The theme for the 20th annual International Roundtable is "Global Health: Promoting Equity Within and Across Borders." The event will promote critical examination of recent progress, and existing and emerging challenges in Global Health. Speakers and student-led workshops will explore the multifaceted nature of health disparities around the world, examine the root causes of these disparities, and highlight innovative solutions to health priorities. The dates are October 10-12, 2013, immediately preceding Family Fest.

In the morning from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, come see our plenary speakers, Nafis Sadik and Sonia Shah kick off the International Roundtable. Dr. Sadik, the former Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary and the former Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), will give a talk about gender disparity and reproductive health. She will be  followed by Sonia Shah, an investigative journalist and author of The Fever,who will be speaking about the role of private interests in the fight against disease.

Afterwards, join us for a series of student-led workshops from 1:50 pm to 4:30 pm, covering topics ranging from cross-cultural birthing practices to malaria in the 21stcentury. These workshops will be held in a variety of places, so check the detailed International Roundtable schedule to find locations.

The evening festivities will include a global health and reception fair from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in Kagin Commons, Alexander G. Hill Ballroom, followed by the screening of the film American Heart from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm in Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center, John B. Davis Lecture Hall, with an introduction and discussion by filmmaker Chris Newberry. The day will conclude with performances by Mac Slams at 10:00 pm in the Cultural House.
