Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, Gilead is the fictional autobiography of the Reverend John Ames, an elderly pastor dying of a heart condition in the small town of Gilead, Iowa. In a long letter to his young son, Ames writes and reflects about his life, family (most notably the relationship between his father and grandfather) as well as other relationships in his life, including the Boughton family and poignant thoughts about his wife and son.
