MacReads Convocation for First Year Students

2:00 PM  - 3:30 PM
Monday Sep 3, 2012
Alexander G. Hill Ballroom, Kagin Commons

First year students are invited to listen to two faculty members discuss this year's reading, The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson.   Prof. Christy Hanson, Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship and a public health specialist, and Prof. Devavani Chatterjea, Biology Department and the director of the concentration in Community and Global Health, will talk about the issues that the book raises in relationship to their own research and teaching. Following this presentation students will have the opportunity to discuss the major themes of the Ghost Map and questions in a small group setting with their peers.

In addition to the book discussions, the MacReads book selection is featured in the library/ITS session that all students participate in as part of their first year course.  Students will be receiving more information about the pre-session assignment in September.  Students are also encouraged to review the introductory video by Prof. Louisa Bradtmiller, Environmental Studies, who talks about her favorite aspect of the Ghost Map.

A recent article in the Macalester alumni magazine, Macalester Today, provides insights by Professors Hanson and Chatterjea on Global Health.  You may access a pdf version of the article. "Global Health" in Macalester Today, Spring 2012.
