Marriage Equality: Where are we now?
7:00 PM
- 8:00 PM
Tuesday Apr 17, 2012
Carnegie Hall 206
A lot has been happening to both open and restrict marriage on the basis of sexuality, from litigation over California’s Proposition 8 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, to the European Court of Human Rights decision not to protect a right to marry by same-sex couples, to three federal courts of appeals considering the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, to Minnesota’s marriage amendment and similar measures in other states
Come join a presentation and discussion with Amy Bergquist, staff attorney at the Advocates for Human Rights and former law clerk in both the Ninth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. The presentation will address the legal and political strategies being used by both supporters and opponents of marriage equality, as part of how to understand the intersection of law and politics at the cutting edge of this issue.
