The Elegance of the Hedgehog is written from the vantage point of a 54-year old French concierge, Renée Michel, and a precocious, but troubled, 12-year-old, Paloma Josse. Outwardly, both exist within in the typical stereotypes that would apply to them, while hiding their talents and finest qualities from those around them. When a wealthy Japanese man moves into their building he sees through their false personas, and is able to help the two discover themselves more fully.
