The Inaugural Lecture of Satoko Suzuki as DeWitt Wallace Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures speaking on "Linguistic Stereotypes in Japan: Gender, Class, and Nationality".

Satoko Suzuki is chair and professor of the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.  She earned her BA from the University of Niigata, Japan, and MA and PhD from the Universityof Minnesota.  She joined Macalester as a lecturer in 1990 and as a tenure-track faculty member in 1994.  She has been serving as the chair of her department (formerly the Japanese Language Program) since 1995.  Under her leadership, the department added a Japanese major in 2004 and a Chinese major in 2010.  Suzuki teaches Japanese language and linguistics courses.  Her courses include Language and Gender in Japanese Society, Communicative Strategies in Japanese Society, and Analyzing Japanese Languages.  She has edited Emotive Communication in Japanese (John Benjamins, 2006), and authored numerous journal articles and book chapters in the field of pragmatics (a sub-field within linguistics).  The journals in which her articles appeared include The Journal of Pragmatics; Linguistics; Pragmatics; and Japanese Language and Literature.
