Discuss "Someone Knows My Name" with Portland alumni

7:00 PM  - 9:00 PM
Thursday Jan 19, 2012
At the home of Joyce Williams '68

The Portland Macalester Alumni Book Club will meet to discuss Lawrence Hill's Someone Knows My Name. Kidnapped as a child from Africa, Aminata Diallo is enslaved in South Carolina but escapes during the chaos of the Revolutionary War. In Manhattan she becomes a scribe for the British, recording the names of blacks who have served the King and earned freedom in Nova Scotia. But the hardship and prejudice there prompt her to follow her heart back to Africa, then on to London, where she bears witness to the injustices of slavery.

Contact Joyce Williams '68 (willijoypdx@gmail.com) to RSVP and for directions to her home.

Upcoming books in this ongoing book club include Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and My Abandonment by Reed College professor Peter Rock. Stay tuned for more details!
