2011 Fall Film Series, Part 4 of 6: The Host

Film critic and Macalester alumnus Colin Covert '74, continues his review of the greatest films you've never heard of with the 2011 Alumni Fall Film Series "Hidden Gems and Surprises, Part 3." The fourth film in the series, The Host, is a South Korean film about a monster that emerges from Seoul's Han River and begins terrorizing the city by attacking people. Hyun-seo (Ah-sung Ko) the daughter of a food-stand owner, Gang-du (Song Kang-ho), is taken by the monster and he fears the worst. After receiving a call from his daughter, Gang-du and his family develop a plan to rescue her. The Host is one of the highest grossing South Korean films of all time and won several awards including Best Film at the Asian Film Awards and at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. Watch Trailer
"Hidden Gems and Surprises, Part 3" will take place this fall. Each film begins at 7 p.m. in the John B. Davis Auditorium in the Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center. The films will be screened on Thursdays, September 29 - November 3, with one exception on Wednesday, October 12. The films for the series include: Ghost World (USA) - Thurs., 9/29; Zazie dans le Métro (French) - Thurs., 10/6; The Wages of Fear (French) - Wed., 10/12; The Host (Korean) - Thurs., 10/20; In Bruges (Irish) - Thurs., 10/27; and Citizen Ruth (USA) - Thurs., 11/3. Each film in the series is $5; free for students with Mac ID. Register online here or pay at the door. Open to all!
