Saturday Apr 30, 2011
Macalester Stadium

Today's meet is dedicated to the memory of Macalester assistant track & field coach and M Club Hall of Fame athlete Janis Rider, who passed away last summer while on vacation in Hawaii.  There will be a naming ceremony at 11:45 a.m. at Macalester Stadium and the meet gets underway at 12 noon. This event will mark the inaugural Janis Rider Track & Field Invitational.

Janis  excelled at Macalester in all three sports seasons, participating in volleyball, basketball and track & field team. She also served as an assistant coach for Macalester’s track & field team since 1999 and was also an assistant volleyball coach at Macalester.

In track & field, she was an outstanding nationally-competitive thrower and was the NCAA III national javelin champion as a senior in 1988, the same year she placed fourth nationally in the shot put. She was a four-time All-American and earned 12 all-conference certificates.  Janis ranks third on Macalester’s women’s basketball all-time rebounding list and seventh on the all-time point scoring chart.

Janis was an avid supporter of Macalester College and served as a Director of the M Club, the college's alumni organization that supports Macalester varsity athletics, for many years.
