In Fieldwork, the main character, Mischa Berlinski, moves to northern Thailand with his girlfriend after she takes a job there as a school teacher.  While working for an English-language newspaper, Berlinski receives a tip about an American anthropologist who was found dead, an apparent suicide, in the Thai prison where she was serving a fifty-year sentence for murder. The investigation into her supposed crime becomes a personal obsession for Berlinski and readers are lead through a tale of anthropologists, missionaries, demon possession, sexual taboos, murder, and more.  Fieldwork website, from the publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Possible books to be read for future discussions include: The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Day After Night by Anita Diamant.
