John B. Davis Lecture Hall, Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center
Andy Overman, Harry Drake Distinguished Professor in the Humanities and Fine Arts, gives his inaugural lecture, Taking Mighty Rome Captive: Trajectories through the Classical World and the World of Classics. Andy Overman began teaching in Macalester's Classics Department in 1993 and has written widely on the development of Christianity and Judaism within their historical context, the interaction between cultures and races in the Roman Empire, diaspora Judaism, and the archaeology of the Roman world. Andy directs excavations in Omrit, Israel, and takes students each summer to work on this site of a Roman temple. His popular courses include "Pagans, Christians and Jews," and "Background to the Modern Middle East, and India and Rome." This endowed professorship was established by alumnus Harry M. Drake '50, who was honored by the college with a Distinguished Citizen alumni award in 2005. A reception follows the lecture; email Andi Wulff to attend.
